After Solitary | FRONTLINE PBS

A ground-breaking immersive walk-around VR experience combines photo and videogrammetry.

Role: 360 video conversion and sound design

When Kenny Moore was convicted of aggravated assault, burglary and theft and sent to Maine State Prison at age 18, he expected to serve an 18-month sentence. But after a series of fights and disruptive behavior, he was sent to solitary confinement, where his disruptive behavior only worsened. All in all, Kenny spent five-and-a-half years in solitary confinement and nearly 20 years in and out of prison. This is the first journalistic VR experience to combine photo- and videogrammetry.

The piece premiered at SXSW 2017 and won best roomscale experience. It also won the World VR Forum's top prize and showed at AFI Docs Fest.

Above is the 360 version of the roomscale experience that I created. In the piece, you meet Kenny as he recounts what life was like in solitary confinement.
